Why Nitrogen?
Excess nitrogen is the most serious pollution problem facing the Bay. While nitrogen occurs naturally in the atmosphere, in soils, and in organic matter, human activities such as driving, lawn fertilizing, electricity generation, wastewater treatment, and agricultural practices generate more nitrogen than the Bay can handle. The result is algal blooms, oxygen-deprived dead zones, and fish kills across the Chesapeake Bay and the thousands of miles of streams and rivers that feed it.
