The Chesapeake Fund provides individuals and businesses the ability to calculate their nitrogen footprint and identify ways to reduce their impact. For those emissions that cannot be cost-effectively reduced, the Fund provides the ability to purchase offsets that will be used to pay for cost-effective projects in targeted watersheds. These projects are selected by the Fund because of their high nitrogen reduction return on investment.
The Chesapeake Fund provides real value and efficiency to the Chesapeake Bay restoration effort. Specifically, the Chesapeake Fund:
Provides real opportunities for change. Through nitrogen accounting and nitrogen reduction services, the Fund allows participants to reduce their impact on water quality, either by changing behavior or by donating to nitrogen offsets. The result will be quantifiable pollution reductions across the watershed.
Creates value for doing the right thing. Through the Fund, citizens and businesses will get "credit" for taking steps to either reduce their nitrogen emissions or offset them by paying for reductions. These credits will serve as the foundation for water quality markets and will help create a more efficient and effective process for restoring and protecting water quality and water resources across the region.
Helps advance restoration financing efforts.Though each of the Bay states has raised significant revenue to support implementation of clean-up plans (known as tributary strategies), these revenues still fall far short in funding the actions that need to take place to restore water quality. The Chesapeake Fund and voluntary nitrogen offset markets can provide much-needed restoration funding for the future.
Achieves multiple environmental and community goals.Reducing nitrogen pollution not only helps clean up the Bay, it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, helps to develop sustainable agriculture, and supports new and innovative restoration economies.
